Should you add suburbs or location based pages to your website to assist you with your SEO strategy?
NO.
The issue with location based pages is that most of it is pretty much the same content over and over again. The only difference is that it is on a different location page, and the issue with this is that you’re simply creating filler content with no unique value. So not only the search engines will discredit this, but it may also affect your other pages negatively as well. When you create a new page, the value of the other pages is shared with this page, and if you create a bunch of suburb pages in a short period of time, that means even more value from the other pages will be shared with the new location pages, and therefore lose rankings.
Yeah, sure, you may rank quicker for those location based pages, which have very little search anyway, but your main higher traffic pages may also lose rank.
Yes, rankings are very volatile and move around a lot, especially during these updates, but if you don’t see improvement as quickly as the below example, then you really need to check if there were any shortcuts you or your marketing agency may have taken.
Take a look at a client which we took over from another agency. As you can see, we have been able to really improve rankings.

Now look what happened when we created suburb pages, which the customer insisted on.

That drop you are seeing is from all the important main service pages. The suburb pages have improved in rankings as they’re not that competitive, and because they got some value off the main pages, but because of this, the value of the main pages have dropped, causing them to lose rankings
“Yeah, but my competitors are doing it.
Okay then, if you want to copy your competitor’s strategy, then why should Google rank you higher above them? What do you as a business offer to your target market that stands out from the rest of the competition? Creating 50 location based pages doesn’t mean anything. Yes, they’ll rank faster, but rankings will be very volatile. Some weeks one location will rank, the next few weeks it won’t, but another location may rank, and so on, causing a roller coaster of emotions for your client when you send them out their monthly reports.
So how should I utilise suburb pages as part of my local SEO strategy?
The only time you should be creating location based pages is if you have an office or physical address in that area. If you really want to create multiple suburb pages, then sit down with your SEO company, research which areas are getting lots of search that you can easily service and maybe pick about four or five of them. Have the page created with carefully thought out content that resonates with that area where you can mention specific things that is unique to that geographic and then make sure each page looks different and not just a copy and paste template of your other location pages. If you would like to add more pages, make sure the website has built enough SEO value and maybe add one or two a month at the most.

FAQs about adding suburb pages for SEO
Can you add 'suburb' based page to rank better in location for SEO?
Not usually. Most suburb pages are content fillers with very little unique value. This will ultimately dilute your main page’s rankings instead of improving them.
Why do location pages sometimes hurt rankings?
Each new page shares authority with your existing pages. If you add many low value suburb pages, your main service pages lose ranking power.
But my competitors use suburb pages! Shouldn’t I do the same?
Copying competitors won’t guarantee better rankings. Google rewards originality and value, not template style duplicate suburb pages.
When should I create suburb or location pages?
Only when you have a real office or physical presence in that area, or when there’s genuine local search demand that you can service.
How can I create suburb pages the right way?
Focus on quality over quantity. Select a few high-value areas, add unique locally relevant content, and build them gradually as your site grows.
